What happens when a tech company backed financially by the government meets a global AI-driven chip craze? You get the biggest stock market debut in Asia this year. On July 27, 2026, Chinese chip giant ChangXin Memory Technologies made its debut on Shanghai's STAR market and its shares surged nearly 470% in a single trading day.
CXMT is China's largest producer of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM). This computer memory chip powers everything from smartphones and laptops to high-performance AI servers. Before today, domestic Chinese investors were eager for a direct way to invest in the country's self-reliance in high-tech manufacturing. CXMT delivered by launching Asia's largest IPO of 2026, raising 57.9 billion yuan, which is roughly $8.6 Billion. Priced at 8.6 yuan per share, the retail portion of the IPO was oversubscribed by more than 200 times as millions of investors rushed to get a piece of their own.
When trading opened CXMT stock instantly exploded to roughly 49 yuan, pushing its total market evaluation to 3.3 trillion yuan, which is over $480 billion. In just a few hours of trading CXMT briefly surpassed banking giant ICBC to become the single most valuable listed company on the Chinese Stock Exchange. Two main factors drove this debut:
The explosion of generative AI created a severe global shortage of high-speed memory chips. With US export controls restricting the access to form chips, Chinese state joints are turning directly to CXMT to supply the servers and devices. CXMT Q1 2026 revenue surged over 700% YOY basis.
A significant portion of CXMT stock remains held by the state on funds and founders subject to lock up agreements. Only a small percentage of total shares were actually available for public trading on day one. The massive retail and institutional demand compressed it was a small supply of shares creating a massive price surge.
Listing Exchange: Shanghai Stock Exchange (STAR Market)
IPO Issue Price: 8.66 yuan ($1.30)First-Day Close Price: 49 yuan (up 446%)
Peak valuation: 3.3 trillion yuan ($480+ Billion)
Global DRAM Market Share: 7.7% (Ranked 4th worldwide)
CXMT's debut highlights the immense demand for global technology independent of western supply chain. For global semiconductor investors– CXMT is now a heavily funded competitor to traditional memory power houses like Samsung and Micron. However, retail investors should remain cautious before buying at these levels, as a 470% first day again driven by restricted supply means the stock is priced for absolute perfection. Furthermore, ongoing geopolitical tensions and potential foreign equipment sanctions could mean CXMT faces operational risks that could trigger price pullbacks once the initial hype wears off.
